Southern Gascony: Climate and Weather
The climate is generally mild, with summer temperatures not as excessively hot as in the south-east, long Indian summers usually extending well into October and plenty of winter sun. The weather tends to be more changeable than in the Mediterranean area because of the Atlantic influence and the mountains. There's enough rain to keep the vegetation lush and green. Winters are rarely very frosty and you'll usually only find snow closer to the mountains. In the Pyrenees, the average temperatures are higher than in the French Alps and it’s warmer earlier and later in the summer, being further south.
January is usually the coldest month though temperatures rarely go below –5°. The skiing season generally starts in late December-early January. There are good resorts for downhill skiing and lovely cross-country and snowshoe trails.
In February, spring often arrives early, bringing cloudless skies, lots of sunshine and pleasantly warm days.
March and April are usually the wettest months, switching between rain and sun as temperatures begin to warm up.
May can be unsettled, with chilly or rainy days, bouts of extreme heat and sudden hailstorms.
June to late August see temperatures rising to the mid 20s and 30s and the heat often veils the mountains in summer haze. Spectacular storms can occur but are short-lived and usually give way to hot sunshine. This is the period of traditional village festivals and colourful local events, vide-greniers and night markets. June to late September are also ideal months for cycling.
September through early November are perfect months for walking and exploring. The days are still long, sunny and clear, the forests rich with colour as the leaves turn.
Mid-November to December is a quieter period with some rainfall but still reasonably mild temperatures. The first snow usually starts to appear on the mountain peaks. At the cottage, heavy frosts are unusual and snow is rare.
Climate change:
Global warming is also affecting European weather patterns and we're beginning to notice changes in typical patterns in the south-west, so the above can only serve as a guideline not a guarantee.
